Review

Melissa Mc Carthy stars in the movie adaption of the memoir “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” the true story of best-selling celebrity biographer Lee Israel (Melissa Mc Carthy). Israel made her living in the 1970’s and 80’s writing autobiographies on the likes of Kathrine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead and Estee Lauder.

Unfortunately for Israel in the 90’s her work had fell out of favour and she couldn’t get any of her work published, she keeps trying to hawk an autobiography of the vaudeville star Fanny Brice to her publicist, who tells her that no one wants to read a Fanny Brice biography.

Down on her luck and with only her cat for company, she gets sacked from her job for drinking and being foul mouthed to her fellow employees. Not at all likable, Israel stumbles on a way of making some extra cash using her gift as a writer to forge personal letters from famous people such as Noel Coward, Marlene Dietrich and Dorothy Parker.

As she gets deeper into her fraud she meets Jack (Richard E. Grant), a fellow hardened drinker, who becomes her partner in crime.

The selling of forged movie memorabilia might not seem like a good idea for a movie but thanks to outstanding performances from McCarthy and Grant Can You Ever Forgive Me? turns out to be a compelling piece of cinema.

Don’t miss.
