Review

Based on Dav Piley’s bestselling children’s books, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is one of the surprise animated films of the summer. Full of toilet humour jokes for the kids and more satirical jokes for the adults Captain Underpants, the movie, is as fresh as a new pair of underpants.

The story, for those not familiar with the book, sees fourth grade pals, George Beard (voiced by Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (Thomas Middleditch) inventing a white Y-front and red caped comic book superhero called Captain Underpants.

After the pair come to loggerheads with their tyrannical school principal, Benjamin Krupp (Ed Helms) over practical jokes he vows to put them in different classes in the hope that it will bring an end to their friendship.

To get their own back and in order to save their friendship George uses a plastic ring from a cereal box to hypnotise Krupp and turn him in to a real life version of Captain Underpants.

For every superhero there is a villain and Captain Underpants nemesis is a teacher called Professor Pippy P. Diarrheastein Poopypants. His sole aim being to rid the world of laughter.

As well has having some cracking jokes, if jokes about peeing and farting is your thing, and I don’t imagine that they’ll be many kids that won’t buy into the humour, Captain Underpants: the First Epic Movie has some wonderful visual gags and some top notch animation.

Highly recommended.
