Review

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is director Mathew Vaughn’s sequel to his 2014 hit, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The enjoyable spy caper sees all the characters’, including ones that shouldn’t be there, return for more Bond spoofing.

The story sees Eggsy (Taron Egerton) still mourning the loss of his mentor and hero, Harry (Colin Firth). Taking over Harry’s role in the fraternity of Kingsman agents, Eggsy has even moved his girlfriend, Swedish princess Tilde, into Harrys flat, his peace and quiet is shattered when the leader of the Golden Circle drugs cartel, Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore), who is guarded by two mechanical dog and likes to put her enemies through a mincer and feed them to others as burgers, single-handedly takes out all of the rest of the Kingsman agents.

Leaving only technical support wizard Merlin (Mark Strong) and Eggsy alive the pair head to Kentucky in the United States where their transatlantic counterparts, The Statesman, are based.

Once there the pair meet up with the American operations boss, the bourbon drinking, Champagne (Jeff Bridges). He partners Eggsy up with agents Tequila (Channing Tatum) and Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) whilst Merlin is teamed up with his US gadget counterpart, Ginger Ale (Halle Berry).

Working their way from one exotic location to the next the team have to track down the evil Poppy Adams who, as well has having kidnapped Elton John, has a nasty surprise for the drug users of the world.

Vaughan infuses the rather ludicrous if somewhat enjoyable story line with some fine action pieces. However most of the American cast are under used and appear only fleetingly in their various roles. Elton John being a stand out in his cameo as a self-centred egotistical pop star, or maybe he’s just being himself, who knows?

Kingsman: the Golden Circle is certainly not a patch on the first movie and at just over 2 hours 20 minutes just about over stays it’s welcome, however there are enough fun moments to keep fans of the first movie happy.
