After American Ultra was trounced at the U.S. Box office by Sinister 2 and Hitman Agent 47 (both sequels), it's screenwriter, Max Landis, took to Twitter moaning that America audiences didn't go to see anything that's original anymore. Well I'm sorry Mr Landis I can't support your argument as I think the reason that it tanked at the box office is for the reason that it's not very good. Saying that, describing it as not very good is maybe doing it a favour because if I'm being really honest then it's terrible.

American Ultra stars Jesse Eisenberg as a drug induced loser called Mike Howell, working in an all-night convenience store, the only ray of light in an otherwise drab life is his girlfriend Phoebe (Kirsten Stewart).

However unknown to him he's really a sleeper agent for the CIA who owing to his liking for marijuana has forgotten the fact. Then for some unknown reason the CIA decide that he's surplus to requirement and send other agents to wipe him out. For the next 90 minutes or so American Ultra becomes an orgy of blood and guts as Mike and Phoebe blow brains out at a rate that would make Rambo embarrassed. In amongst the bloodletting the story becomes more and more confusing, even the normally reliable Connie Briton (TVs Nashville) constantly looks as if she would rather be anywhere else but in this pile of nonsense.

One for DVD only.
