The Conjuring was an above average entry in the horror film genre; it was well paced and had some genuinely frightening moments.

Now the makers of that film bring us a prequel, Annabelle. If you saw the first film you'll remember that Annabelle was the doll that became possessed by demons. Annabelle takes us back to when the demonic doll was fresh out of the wrapper. This time the doll is owned by a young married couple who after her husband gifts her the doll they are attacked by members of a crazy cult. It's after the attack that the doll becomes the conduit for a demon and strange goings on start to happen in the house.

Annabelle starts promisingly but quickly drifts into we've seen this all before territory. Strange white-robed figures quickly pop in and out of view, pipes creak, doors slam and ghosts run about the hallways.

At times Annabelle is more likely to raise a chuckle as opposed to a shiver. If you are a fan of things that go bump in the night horror flicks, then there should be enough in Annabelle to send shivers down your spine, just don't go expecting anything original.
