On a December morning in 1970, the King of Rock ’n Roll showed up on the lawn of the White House to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Nixon. Starring Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley and two-time Academy Award® winner Kevin Spacey as Richard Nixon, comes the untold true story behind this revealing, yet humorous moment in the Oval Office, forever immortalized in the most requested photograph in the National Archives.

Review

Elvis & Nixon is the enjoyable fictionalised account of the real-life meeting in the White House between the two most famous Americans at the time.

A lot funnier than expected with a fantastic performance from Michael Shannon (reuniting with Return director Liza Johnson) who hilariously brings across the slightly absurd karate-kicking, police badge-collecting antics of the King whilst hinting at the sad, lonely side of a man who's only too aware that he's constantly playing a role rather than existing as a real person. In fact as well as being about the meeting, it's also a study of the over-dependency Elvis has on longtime friend and 'Memphis Mafia' member Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer).

Kevin Spacey offers up an impressive Nixon, though absent for the first half he does feel more like one of the supporting cast than an equal lead at times. Though he more than holds his own against Shannon when the two finally meet.

Speaking of the supporting cast, it too is impressive. Colin Hanks, Evan Peters, Tate Donovan, Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Knoxville and Tracy Letts are all excellent.

At a brisk 86 minutes it's a highly entertaining film that is well worth a look.
