Review

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is the fifth and allegedly final film (more of that later) in Disney’s Pirates franchise. Most of the cast from the first film return, with some having more of a part than others.

Johnny Depp continues in the role of pirate Jack Sparrow whilst Spanish actor Javier Bardem takes up the title role as Captain Salazar

Beginning with a spectacular theft of bank safe Salazar’s Revenge is one spectacular action sequence after the other.

The story sees Will Turner (Orlando Bloom reprising his role in what amounts to not much more than a cameo appearance) still cursed and sailing as the captain of the Flying Dutchman. After his Twelve-year old son, Henry Turner (Lewis Mc Gowan) stows away on the ship so that he can meet his father, Will reveals to him that he is doomed to sail the seas for eternity unless his son can track down the mythical Trident of Poseidon which has the power to lift the curse and free Will.

Moving on nine years Henry is now fully grown (now played by Brenton Thwaites) is searching for trident on the island of St Martin in the Caribbean when he meets astronomer Carina Smith (Kaya Scodelario) who just happens to be in possession of a diary which contains clues to the whereabouts of Poseidon’s Trident.

The pair then team up and shortly after meet up with Jack Sparrow who is being hunted by the ghostly pirate Captain Armando Salazar. Salazar having escaped from the Devil’s Triangle where Jack had imprisoned him many years earlier and is now seeking revenge. Meanwhile chasing all of them is Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) who is now working for the British Navy.

The cast are all in outstanding form, Bardem is particularly good and brings a freshness to proceedings.

Salazar’s might not convert any new comers to the series but for those that have watched and loved the previous four outings this feels like a welcome return of an old friend.

As previously mentioned the trailer promises that this is Captain Jack’s final mission however a post credit sequence hints that the series might just have more to offer, hopefully this will be the case and Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is a terrific return to form.
