“Sin City” was a massive hit with both the critics and the public when it was released in 2005.
Frank Miller's pulp-noir story's made up of various story's from within Sin City were pretty groundbreaking at the time. Now nine years later we have the follow up, "Sin City: A Dame to kill for". Just like before we have different stories, some linked some not, and all told in monochrome with only a flash of colour. The one thing that hasn't changed and the thing that you would expect from a film directed by Robert Rodriguez, there are loads of scantily clad woman and plenty of cartoon violence.
A Dame to Kill For is essentially made up of three story's. The first concerns Joseph Gordon-Levvitt's gambler who has a run in with Senator Roark (Powers Booth reprising his role from the first film). The second story, and without doubt the best of the three involves Dwight Mc Carthy, Mc Carthys character you might remember was played by Clive Owen in the first film and now by the miracle of cosmetic surgery he has miraculously came back as Josh Brolin. Dwight this time gets himself involved with an old flame, the dame of the title played brilliantly by Eva Green. Greens character is having problems with her current lover and turns to Dwight for help.
The third and the weakest of the three brings back Jessica Alba's Nancy. In what is essentially a follow on from the story involving her in the first film Nancy is out for revenge on Senator Roark. Bruce Williis even pops up briefly as a ghost?
A Dame to kill for is patchy to say the least, the story jumps all over the place, making you wonder at times if it's a sequel or a prequel. The one saving grace and the thing that just about gives it pass marks is an outstanding performance from Eva Green. She is mesmerising when she is on screen and you can see why Dwight would fall for this femme fatale.
If you enjoyed the first film then there should be enough in A Dame to kill for to keep you happy. For anyone not familiar with Franks Millers work you might just wonder what all the fuss is about.
