Straight Outta Compton is a biographical film that tells the story of rap pioneers N.W.A.

Beginning in 1986 in the Los Angeles area of Compton, where gang warfare and drug dealing is an everyday way of life for its black inhabitants, we are introduced to some of its most notorious residents and future members of the rap band. There's drug dealer Eazy - E (Jason Mitchell), music lover and dreamer, Dr Dre (Corey Hawkins), Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson Jr, who has an uncanny resemblance to his father who just happens to be Ice Cube himself), DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jnr) and MC Ren (Aldis Hodge).

Starting out playing in small neighbourhood clubs the film tells the story of the bands rise to fame and its ultimate break up in tragic circumstances.

Produced by Dr Dre and Ice Cube, Straight Outta Compton, the name of the band’s first album, does feel at times as if it's skirting around the violence and controversy that followed the group. The violence and the animosity between the rival rappers is all here however it feels as if the film is trying to justify their reasons for their violence and drug dealing.

There are some fine performances from its large cast, Jason Mitichell as Eazy - E is particularly good and O'Shea Jackson Jr proves that he's he could have a career as an actor if he steps out of his father’s shadow.

The one complaint is that at nearly two and a half hours in length it does feel at times as if the story is drawn out, this is in no doubt down to the fact that the director try's to give equal screen time to the individual rappers story.

If you enjoy rap music and are not easily offended by violence and bad language then there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy Straight Outta Compton.
