Jack Black returns to Goosebumps territory in horror director Eli Roth’s family friendly movie, The House With A Clock In Its Walls.

Set in the 1950’s, Black plays Jonathan Barnavelt, an eccentric warlock, who after, the death of his sister and her husband, takes custody of their young son, Lewis Barnavelt.

After moving in with his uncle the young orphan finds that the house that he is living in has a life of its own, an armchair runs around like a dog, pictures on the walls come to life and a hedge shaped lion comes to life spilling its leafy bowels over anyone that goes close enough.

Adding to this unusual mix is Jonathan Barnavelt’s next door neighbour and best friend, kindly witch Florence Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett).

Johnathan doesn’t have many rules for young Lewis but the one that he has, and the one that he tells him must never be broken ,is that he must under no circumstances open a locked cupboard.

Finding his uncle smashing up the walls one night with a hammer, young Lewis is told that the house used to belong to an evil pair of witches called Isaac and Selena (Kyle MacLachlan, Renee Elise Goldsberry) and before they died they planted a ticking Doomsday clock within the walls of the house and if the clock is started then the end of days will be unleashed.

Needless to say that Lewis, in an attempt to fit in at school and impress his one friend Tarby Corrigan (Sunny Suliic) breaks his uncle’s one rule, releasing evil forces that are hell bent on destroying humanity.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls is an entertaining story with some excellent special effects, Black and Blanchett are particularly good and play off each other well.

Director Roth better known for his adult horror movies such as Cabin Fever and Hostel proves that he’s got more in his arsenal than gore fests.

For the young target audience and fans of Goosebumps then this is a must see.
