UPGRADE is a thrilling and hyper violent vision of the future from the
producers of GET OUT and THE PURGE, and the creator of SAW and INSIDIOUS.
After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him
paralyzed, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green, SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING,
PROMETHEUS) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental
cure that will "upgrade" his body. The cure - an Artificial Intelligence
implant called STEM - gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything he
experiences and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those
who murdered his wife and left him for dead.
Upgrade is type of movie or TV show that might have been made in the 70’s
and 80's,Charles Bronson’s Death Wish (Not the inferior Bruce Willis
remake) and The Exterminator and the TV series The Six Million Dollar Man
are just a few that Upgrade has more than a passing resemblance to.
It does feel like that Blumhouse Productions are looking to create their
own superhero franchise with Upgrade.
The action comes thick and fast as Grey Trace (Logan Marshall Green) seeks
vengeance on the bad guys that killed his wife. The story does become more
and more preposterous as Stem, the artificial intelligence that’s been
planted in Trace’s body, takes more control of him.
Upgrade is nothing more than an entertaining B movie that would be best
appreciated accompanied with a six pack of beer and a pizza. It’s might not
be highbrow entertainment but it’s highly tongue in cheek enjoyable
