It’s Christmas and Ned Fleming’s (Bryan Cranston) family printing business is in financial trouble. Hiding the fact from his family he heads off to California with his wife Barb (Megan Mullally) and their 15-year-old son Scotty (Griffin Gluck). The reason for their trip is to visit their daughter Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) who intends to introduce them to her new boyfriend, millionaire app developer Laird Mayhem (James Franco).
Needless to say when the family meet Laird they discover that he’s not the type of person that they want their daughter getting involved with. Tattooed Laird has no filter when he opens his mouth and says whatever comes into his head, most of his sentences begin with the F word.
Written and directed by John Hamburg who was, unsurprisingly given the similarities, the co-writer of Meet the Parents and Its sequel Meet the Fockers, Why Him?, is a very poor excuse for a comedy. Most of the jokes are crude, much like Laird, and rely on swearing to gain laughs.
If trying to copy Meet the Parents wasn’t bad enough there’s even a nod to the Pink panther film with Lairds manservant taking to attacking him at every opportunity.
Why Him? is entirely forgetful and won’t be remembered long after the Christmas decorations are gone.
