Based on a short story of the same name Christy tells the story of 17-year-old Christy (a wonderful Daniel Power). Kicked out of his foster home, his mother had died leaving him in foster care, he is temporarily housed with his half brother on an Irish council estate.
Suffering from depression he reconnects with his estranged family, some nice some not so nice. Finding a talent for cutting hair Christy finds a purpose that might just keep him away from a life of crime that’s endemic in the local youth.
Beautifully filmed, Director Brendan Carty's Irish drama really gets to the ugly heart of what it's like to be brought up in a poorer council estate and Daniel Power, in his feature film debut, shines amongst a hugely talented and wonderful cast. On the downside, at times it did struggle, in terms of pacing, to escape its origins as a short story.
Christy is a terrific showcase for young Power, it’s just a shame that Brendan Carty couldn’t have fleshed his characters out a bit more. If he had Christy might have been something special.
