Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser and Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin will present a free exhibition of original photography and poetry from their exploratory artistic memoir DUNE: EXPOSURES at Frieze No. 9 Cork Street, London from Friday 29 November.
This remarkable ode to the art of filmmaking provides unique behind-the-scenes insight into the creation of director/storyteller Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two.
Greig Fraser said: “I remember early on, during the first film, Denis told me that when he dreamed about the film, he dreamed in 4:3, which is very much a big screen format. But what I think is most impressive about Denis is that even at that scale, there’s always a humanity and an intimacy to the scene, as he writes it and as we film it. From a camera perspective, Denis didn’t write one simple scene in Dune: Part Two, every scene had a level of complexity that was way beyond what I’d done before, and it was very important to Denis that the camera mirrored the emotional journey of these characters. I hope that Josh and I are conveying with EXPOSURES the singular experience we had making these films together and that the audience has watching them.
Josh Brolin said: “I love that there’s a bit of a poet in Gurney Halleck, even as he serves House Atreides—first Duke Leto and then Paul—as Warmaster, dedicating himself to defending them in battle no matter the consequences. Like my character, I felt inspired by the experience I was
having as an actor, and the fact that Denis had tasked Greig with documenting it visually while I was capturing my own feelings through words felt like fate somehow. Both of these films were emotional for me, so to take it to another place, along with my friend, to create something new that hopefully honours the gift that Denis gave all of us with these films, has been such a great adventure.”
“EXPOSURES” (Greig Fraser/Josh Brolin) A collaborative journey into the world of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two will be on display in Gallery 3 at No. 9 Cork Street from Friday 29 November – Saturday 14 December 2024. The Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 6pm and is free and open to all.
About Dune: Exposures
During the shooting of Dune and Dune: Part Two, director Denis Villeneuve asked Fraser if he would document the filming process using still photography. This unusual request led the cinematographer on an unexpected creative journey that yielded an electrifying gallery of that are candid, spontaneous, abstract, and wholly evocative.
Meanwhile, Josh Brolin, a natural writer, was so moved by the experience of shooting Dune and Dune: Part Two―in which he plays Warmaster Gurney Halleck―that he captured his experiences in vivid, poignant prose.
Close friends, Brolin and Fraser bonded further during production, solidifying a connection that led to this remarkable collaboration that seamlessly juxtaposes the actor’s enthralling writing with the cinematographer’s stunning images.
Josh and Greig then teamed up with designer Me and the Bootmaker and California-based publisher Insight Editions to publish both a trade and Limited Edition of Dune: Exposures. Published by Titan Books in the UK, the book quickly became a bestseller upon publication in February 2024.
About Dune: Part Two
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, based on the second half of Frank Herbert’s acclaimed novel, completes the cautionary tale of Paul Atreides’ swift and dangerous rise to power. Vengeance, prophecy, fervent followers and political manipulation ultimately lead Paul to abandon the formidable pull of love and his conscience to accept a fate he knows will destroy so much.
In this epic conclusion, internationally acclaimed writer-director Denis Villeneuve dives deep into the psychological lure of power while expanding the story’s scope and scale. Villeneuve’s take on what many consider an unadaptable classic delivers a bold and artistic cinematic vision that pushes the boundaries of immersive storytelling. The film stars a decorated international ensemble of Academy Award® nominees and winners, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem, who bring Villeneuve’s compelling characters to life.
Villeneuve also reunites with many of his renowned, award-winning collaborators from the first film to execute his unique vision, including co-writer Jon Spaihts, cinematographer Greig Fraser, editor Joe Walker, costume designer Jacqueline West, production designer Patrice Vermette, composer Hans Zimmer, re-recording mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill, visual effects
supervisor Paul Lambert and special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer. Set Decorator Shane Vieau and supervising sound editor Richard King also join the esteemed group of artisans for the story’s stunning conclusion.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and released earlier this year to critical acclaim, Dune: Part Two achieved massive box office success, surpassing the $700 million mark less than two months after its release.
