Back in 2022 Fall surprised everyone when it came from nowhere to gross $21.8 million worldwide against a modest budget of $3 million. The story was simple; two young females are left stranded up an extremely high TV mast in the middle of nowhere with no way down.
Now 4 years later we have Fall 2 or Fall 2: Deadpoint if you’re in the U.S.A. The sequel begins pretty much straight after the original, there’s no four-year gap here, and sees Jax Gardner (Harriet Slater), her sister Virginia was killed in the first installment, finding her sisters bucket list. She’s then convinced by her sister's friend Luce (Arsema Thomas) to head to Mount Kwan in Thailand where they plan on attempting a plank walk that’s 11, 0000ft in the air. The walk consists of a few rotten boards that are tethered to the mountain by a few rusty bolts.
Why you would attempt such a thing after your sister has been killed whilst doing something equally as stupid is anyone's guess. So, with logic and common sense thrown out the window, the pair hire a guide Jon Platt (Tom Brittney) to take them on the climb.
Heading up a rusty ladder, that goes higher than Jacks Beanstalk, the two girls, after an earthquake conveniently knocks out the plank walk both in front and behind them, end stranded in what little of the walkway is left.
From there on things get even more stupid as the hapless pair try and retrieve a radio that could be their lifeline but is stuck just out of their reach.
Directed by identical twin brothers Peter and Michael Spierig Fall 2 struggles to find the same degree of peril that made the first film so entertaining. There are some terrifying watch through your fingers moments but there are few and far between. Things only really pick up in the final third when things take a strange turn and we end up in what feels like an entirely different film. It begins to feel more like Cliffhanger (1993) than Fall (2022).
Fall 2 might not be highbrow entertainment but if you enjoyed the first one then the chances are you’ll find plenty to like in this enjoyable escapist piece of nonsense.
