Review (Scott McCutcheon 08/01/26)

If you think of boxing films the one that will more than likely pop into your head will be Rocky. Sadly, other than being executive produced by Rocky himself (Sylvester Stallone) Giant has absolutely nothing in common with Rocky, in fact it could be described as the polar opposite to Rocky.

Rocky was the story of a likable and charismatic underdog where Giant is the story of an arrogant, self-centred narcissist.

For those that don’t have a great knowledge of 90s boxers, Prince Naseem "Naz" Hamed (Amir El-Masry) was a British-Yemeni boxing champion who was known for his flamboyant showboating style.

Giant tells the story from, aged 7, when his talent was spotted by Sheffield based Irish boxing trainer Brendan Ingle (Pierce Brosnan). The pair, despite the great success Naz would have, would go on to have a fractured relationship that was driven mostly by money and in the case of Naz, an over inflated ego.

Director Rowan Athale’s, he also wrote and produced, film has some nice moments particularly when it’s covering Naz in his schoolboy days. It’s when it gets to the boxing that the wheels fall off. With CGI boxing matches that a look as if they come from an early 90s video game and a central character (Naz) that you hope will get knocked out in his next fight, Giant, other than a fine performance from Brosnan, has to go down as something of a disappointment.
