Review (Scott McCutcheon 29/01/26)

Disney haven’t had much luck with their adult dramas of late. Ella McCay was awful and was, thankfully, seen by pretty much nobody. Is This Thing On?, a depressive film that feels like sitting watching a married couple going through marriage guidance counselling, doesn’t set the heather of fire either.

Directed by Bradley Cooper who also co-wrote with Arnett, and has a small part as his very annoying friend, Is This Thing On? is billed as a comedy, I must have missed the joke, as there’s practically nothing funny going on here, his standup routines are as funny as toothache, sees Alex and Tess (Will Arnett and Laura Dern), after years of unhappiness in their marriage, finally splitting up and going their separate ways.

After the split Tess goes back to her passion of coaching volleyball whilst Alex mopes about feeling sorry for himself.

One night whilst wallowing in self-pity, and unable to pay the few dollars needed to cover the cost of entry to an open mic night at a comedy club, he puts himself down on the list of comedians. Seems you get in for free if you’re funny.

With no jokes to tell Alex rambles on about his failed marriage and finds that the audience love him, why? Only God and the scriptwriters know.

The whole premise of Is This Thing On? is will the couple get back together. No prizes for guessing the outcome in this formulaic drama, sorry comedy.

Is This Thing On? is another misfiring drama from Disney, perhaps someone should tell them that they would be better sticking to films involving Superheroes’ or animated animals. That way we won’t have to endure the likes of this.
