Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, as it was known back in 2023, wasn’t the success the producers hoped it would be. It’s possible that it was only Part 1 put cinema goers off and maybe the reason it’s now dropped the Part 1 part from its title. So, perhaps learning from the lesson that in general people are not that keen on only seeing half of a story we now get Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning, which originally had the title Dead Reckoning Part 2, so make sure you do your homework and see Part 1 first.
Helped by Grace (Hayley Atwell), Benji (Simon Pegg) and new team member Davis (Greg Tarzan), Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must track down a sunken Russian Nuclear submarine in search of a device that will let him control the AI programme that’s taking over all of the world’s nuclear arsenals and is threatening world destruction.
As is usual with Mission Impossible films we’re whisked between various locations that serve no purpose other than adding a location for the next outlandish stunt or set piece. There’s two major action set pieces in Final Reckonings 170-minute runtime. One set on a submarine is perhaps the best and most thrilling action scene in any of the Mission Impossible films whilst the second one involving two biplanes feels very much like the helicopter chase scene in Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018).
Early critic reviews have described it as boring . Why , is anyone’s guess, as Final Reckoning is a terrific action film that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat from the first to the last minute. Flashbacks, which again have been criticised by critics, help set up a nice return for one of the franchises early characters.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is up there with Fallout as possibly the best Mission: Impossible film. If this is the last one, as rumours would have us believe, Tom Cruise and Ethan Hunt have signed off with a cracking piece of entertainment.
