Review (Scott McCutcheon 21/05/26)

Director André Øvredal’s last film in 2023, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, didn’t do so well at the box-office which was a shame as it was a pretty decent film.

Hopefully he’ll have better luck with Passenger, a genuinely scary edge of your seat horror film.

After a young couple (Jacob Scipio and Lou Llobell) witnesses a gruesome highway accident, if you’ve seen the trailer you’ll have seen most of the opening scene, they soon realise they did not leave the crash scene alone, as a demonic presence called the Passenger that won't stop until it claims them both turns their van life adventure into a nightmare.

Øvredal’s film takes a while to get going but once it does it manages to pack a good few scares into its relatively short runtime.

As is the way of most horror films some of the plot twists and the decisions made by the main characters, camping out in a dense forest probably isn’t the best idea given the circumstance, is questionable but other than that Passenger is a pretty thrilling ride and way better than some of the recent horror outings that have infested cinemas.

4/5
