Review (Scott McCutcheon 28/05/26)

Having directed some of arguably the best musical orientated films in recent years, (Once (2006), Begin Again (2013) and Sing Street (2016) John Cairney returns with another crowd pleaser in Power Ballad.

Rick Power (Paul Rudd), an American, has married and settled down in Ireland after failing to fulfil his dream of becoming a famous rockstar.

Rather than playing Madison Square Garden’s Rick is now the lead singer in a wedding band. It’s at one of the bands gigs where he meets fading boy-band star Danny Wilson (Nick Jonas). The two bond over music at a late-night jam session where Rick plays Danny has song that he’s written many years ago.

The pair part ways on the best of terms but when Danny turns Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves - even if it means risking everything he cares about.

The music penned by Gary Clark, who was the lead singer in the 80s band Danny Wilson, if you know that you’ll get the in joke about Jonas’s character’s name, is terrific as are Rudd and Jonas.

If you thought a film about copyright theft might be a bit heavy then you’re in for a pleasant surprise as Power Ballad is a toe tapping piece of feel-good cinema.

Highly recommended.
