Review (Scott McCutcheon 05/02/26)

Part Misery part Love Island, Send Help is a terrific drama/horror that’s helped immensely by wonderful performances from its two leads.

Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams in arguably a career best performance) is a meek strategist at a financial management company. Promised a promotion by her boss that all changes when he dies and the company is taken over by his male chauvinistic and arrogant son Bradley (Dylan O’Brien).

From their first meeting Bradley instantly takes a dislike to Linda, preferring females that might go above and beyond the requirements of the job are more his style, and after giving the promotion to an old college buddy he makes arrangements to have Linda moved to their offices in Bangkok.

On their way to Bangkok, to finalise the company’s merger, the plane ends up in a storm and just as Bradley and his colleagues are ridiculing Linda behind her back whilst watching an audition tape, she made for Survivor, the plane is struck by lightning.

Ending up in the sea, Linda and Bradley the only two survivors, end up washed up on the same beach on a remote uninhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand.

Not to give too much away but on the island, roles are reversed with Linda becoming “the boss” whilst Bradley has to do as she says in order to survive.

The only downside is director Sam Raimi perhaps keeps the story going on for slightly longer than was needed with the ending not being as satisfying as it could have been, other than that Send Help is wonderful blend of horror, comedy and drama with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end.

4/5
