Review (Scott McCutcheon 19/06/24)

It’s not often I can find no redeeming qualities in a film. Sometimes the acting’s bad but the story makes up for it, sometimes the stories bad and the photography makes up for it. Sadly Something in the Water is a rare thing, a film that is so bad it has no redeeming qualities at all.

The distributors couldn’t have picked a worse time to release their film as Netflix released another shark story, Under Paris, just a few weeks ago. Whilst it might not be Jaws, Under Paris, unlike Something in the Water, doesn’t take itself too seriously and as such turns out to be a lot of fun, which sadly Something in the Water isn’t.

The story is pretty simple, four friends attend the wedding of old friend Lizzie (Lauren Lyle, Outlander) in the Caribbean and on the day before the wedding they decide to go to a remote island where one of them is attacked by something in the water. With tourniquet being a foreign word to them the five hapless souls make a dash for the mainland and unsurprisingly they sink the boat and end up in the water.

Filmed half the time in what looks like a swimming pool, at least that’s the impression you get as the characters look for most of the time as if they are standing on the bottom rather than treading water and with characters so dislikeable you’re more likely to be cheering for the sharks by the time they turn up, Something in the Water has to go down as one massive disappointment.
