Review (Scott McCutcheon 04/09/25)

The Conjuring: Last Rites is set in 1986 two years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do. The Warrens (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), along with their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson), who has the same spiritualist power as her mother, have now settled down to a life away from demonic spirits.

However, events and the devil have a different idea for them when, across the country in Pennsylvania, the Smurl family, who have just bought a possessed mirror, and a rather hideous mirror at that, for their two daughters, start to see some weird goings on in the house.

After a priest, sent to investigate the strange goings on, hangs (Steve Coulter) himself, and the Warrens daughter has a premonition at the priest’s funeral, the Warrens head to the home of the Snurls, to rid the house of the resident demons.

At just over 2 hours 15 minutes The Conjuring the Last Rites is the longest in the series of Conjuring films, by a minute (The Conjuring 2 clocked in at 2 hours 14 minutes), and boy does it feel like it. Cutting 30 minutes from its running time and making it more compact might have saved this from being a bit of a slogfest.

The introduction of the Warrens daughter’s new boyfriend (Ben Hardy), who seems to do little more than ask Ed Warren stupid questions, adds nothing to the plot other than making the whole thing feel that the younger characters have only been added in order to push the franchise forward with a younger cast.

Fans of the Conjuring universe in a whole will probably get the most from it as it has a number of references to previous film, Annabel features heavily in this one. However, if you’re not a fan The Conjuring: Last Rites just feels like the dying embers of a franchise that should have ended when it was on top.

3/5
