Written by Owen Egerton from an adaptation of his short story and is directed by Corin Hardy. Hardy has a couple of minor horror films under his belt, most notably The Nun (2018) and The Hallow (2015), and he returns to the genre with the enjoyable if somewhat unoriginal slasher pic, Whistle.
The premise is simple, a group of high school students find and ancient Aztec Death Whistle that if blown any person who hears the screech that it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down.
Fans of teen horror films will probably guess where the plots going with the gruesome deaths getting bloodier as the carnage unfolds. A car crash victim dying in front of his parents, in his bedroom, being one of the highlights.
Whistle is a solid teen slasher film that is slightly let down by overly relying on the same plot lines from the likes of the Final Destination and Smile films (Smile with a whistle would be a good way of describing it).
Dafne Keen is wonderful in the lead role whilst Nick Frost who is one of the teachers at the college just about steals the show in the few scenes that he’s in.
Ultimately Whistle doesn’t really bring anything new to the horror genre but it has enough blood, guts and thrills to keep fans of the aforementioned films (and teen slashers in general) happy.
